Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until she reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might cause. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up performing as a form of social interaction at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry managed to get tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. However, her homesickness brought her to California again where she began to work on stage. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017 she had an recurring role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal with her father. The actress was also featured on The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite having a connection to this persona.
